As part of the Fifth Street renovation, Bardstown City Schools is transforming the former A-Wing, into the Smotherman Arts Wing. This space is being redesigned as a dedicated arts hub, built to support how students learn, create, rehearse, and perform.
Renderings of the Smotherman Arts Wing were shared with families and community members during a preview event in January 2026. The project reflects a long-term investment in arts education and student opportunity.
Arts-Specific Learning Spaces
The Smotherman Arts Wing will include purpose-built spaces to support:
- Strings
- Chorus
- Band
- Visual arts
- Drama
Rooms are being designed with proper acoustics, flexible layouts, and dedicated areas for small-group and individual practice. These spaces will allow instruction and rehearsal to happen simultaneously without competing for space.
Outdoor Performance Space
One of the key features of the project is an outdoor performance space. This open-air area will include a raised stage and turf seating area. It will be used for rehearsals, performances, and community events, expanding opportunities for students to perform beyond traditional indoor settings.
Performing Arts Green Room
The project also includes a performing arts green room. This space will give students a place to prepare, warm up, and gather before performances. It is designed to support students behind the scenes and improve the overall performance experience.
Arts Wing Lobby
The arts wing lobby will serve as the central gathering space for the wing. It will be a bright, welcoming area that highlights student artwork and program achievements. The lobby will also function as a shared space for students between classes and before performances.
