Bardstown City Schools Introduces New General Contracting Program

Bardstown City Schools is proud to announce the addition of a new general contracting program to its career and technical education offerings. Starting this school year, students can explore the world of general contracting without leaving the BCS campus. The Path2Pro general contracting program will be housed in the newly renovated Bardstown Polytechnic Center, set to open this fall. The construction path will be one of eight programs available at “Bardstown Poly.”

This new general contracting concentration offers students up to a four-year experience in the building trades. Upon completion, students will have hands-on skills and knowledge in construction, contracting principles, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. Additionally, they will learn to read and design blueprints, use layout tools, coordinate roles on a job site, and explore various career opportunities after graduation.

Students will have the opportunity to take a variety of courses offered through the general contracting program, including:

  • Introduction to Building Construction Technology
  • Residential Maintenance Carpentry
  • Residential HVAC Maintenance
  • Residential Maintenance Wiring
  • Residential Maintenance Plumbing

Students interested in the general contracting program can request to take the available courses during schedule changes on July 25 and 26.

“With a state-of-the-art construction classroom, advanced training equipment, and expert instruction, these students will gain more than just basic skills,” said Lance Blanford, Workforce Development Coordinator. “They will learn advanced techniques such as diagnosing low-water faults on geothermal units and repairing ignition failures on tankless water heaters—skills that are in high demand both locally and nationally.”

Kirk Brown, a 2000 graduate of Bardstown High and proud father of three Tigers, has been hired as the instructor. With 27 years of experience as a mechanical contractor, Kirk brings extensive knowledge in installing, maintaining, and servicing electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems for both residential and commercial properties. He has successfully managed Brown’s Mechanical LLC, a family-run business serving the Bardstown community since 1942. Additionally, Kirk holds multiple professional licenses, including KY Master HVAC, KY Master Plumbing, KY Master Electrical, and KY Electrical Contractor licenses. His deep understanding of business management and hands-on experience in the construction industry will provide invaluable mentorship and guidance to students.
