Logan Lanham’s Path to a Future in Healthcare

Bardstown High School Senior Selected for Prestigious Norton Scholar Program

Bardstown High School senior Logan Lanham has always known he wanted a career where he could make a difference. Now, he’s one step closer to achieving his dream of becoming a nurse anesthetist after being selected for the highly competitive Norton Scholar Program, a rare opportunity that offers help paying for college while getting on the fast track to a great health care career.

More than 600 students from across Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio applied for the program, and only 100 were invited to interview. Logan’s preparation, work ethic, and determination helped him rise to the top — earning a spot as one of the few selected. Even more impressive, Logan is one of just four students in the program who already hold a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license.

As part of the Norton Scholar Program, Logan spends every Monday and Friday at Norton Women’s and Children’s Hospital on the 2East Med-Surg unit. From 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., he assists patients, changes beds, stocks supplies, responds to call lights, and learns what it means to care for others in moments that matter most.

This opportunity also comes with a $42,000 scholarship through Norton’s partnership with Galen College of Nursing, Bellarmine University, Sullivan University, and the University of Kentucky. After turning 18, Logan will complete a second onboarding process and officially begin working as a Norton nurse while continuing his education.

“I’m incredibly thankful for the health science program. It has prepared me a lot for what I’m going into,” Logan said. “Mrs. Newton and Mrs. Schooling are the best teachers I’ve ever had. That’s an understatement.”

Prepared for What’s Next — The Bardstown Way

Logan’s success story highlights what it means to be a Bardstown Tiger. Through Bardstown City School’s Health Science pathway, he has been able to earn college credit, industry certifications, and real-world experience — all while still in high school.

His relevant coursework includes:

  • Principles of Health Science
  • Medical Terminology/Emergency Procedures
  • Human Anatomy
  • Medicaid Nursing Assistant (MNA)
  • Clinical Medical Assisting (CCMA)
  • AP Biology
  • AP Chemistry with lab
  • MNA Certified
  • Pursuing Phlebotomy and EKG Certification

By graduation, Logan will have earned four industry-recognized certifications and multiple college credits that put him well ahead of most nursing students entering college.

More Than Academics

Logan’s accomplishments go beyond the classroom. He has been an active member of HOSA: Future Health Professionals for four years, participated in Y-Club through his sophomore year, played on the BHS soccer team, and even coaches a U8 boys’ recreational soccer team.

Service runs in his family. Logan’s grandfather and nana dedicated 47 years to EMS, where they not only served as educators and paramedics but also managed the local service. His mother spent years working as a 911 dispatcher. His father has been a firefighter for more than 12 years and now serves as captain at Nelson County Fire Department and lieutenant at Bardstown Fire Department.

Looking Ahead

After graduation, Logan plans to attend Galen College of Nursing, where he’ll pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) through an accelerated three-year program. His first year will be fully online, while his second and third years will be a hybrid model of online and on-campus. Logan will continue to earn money and gain real-world experience at Norton.

Through hard work and determination, Logan has turned his passion for healthcare into real skills and opportunities. With the Norton Scholar Program and his health science background, he’s well-prepared to continue learning, growing, and moving closer to his goal of becoming a nurse anesthetist.
