Important Update to Kentucky’s School Attendance Law

We want to inform you of an important update to Kentucky’s School Attendance Law (KRS 159.150) that will take effect this 2024-25 school year, as outlined in House Bill 611. This update impacts all families with school-aged children, K-12, in the Commonwealth.

The new legislation requires the Director of Pupil Personnel to notify the County Attorney’s office if a student accumulates 15 or more unexcused absences during the academic year. This change aims to emphasize the importance of regular school attendance and to provide additional support to families to help prevent chronic absenteeism.

We understand that absences are sometimes unavoidable. Please refer to your child’s student handbook to review the policies on excused absences. Each student is allowed 6 parent notes per school year, which are accepted for the day they are used and do not carry forward. Our goal is to work with families to support students’ education and address any barriers to consistent attendance.

Regular school attendance is essential for academic success. Please plan accordingly to ensure your child attends school consistently. If your child approaches 15 unexcused absences, please be aware of the potential involvement of the county attorney’s office as mandated by this new law.

We are here to support you and your child’s educational journey. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your school administration or the district’s DPP office.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Together, we can ensure a successful future for all students in Kentucky.
